Multimodal transportation is the transportation of goods performed by several different modes of transport and their combinations, such as sea, rail, cargo, road and air transport. The specificity of such transportations lies in the fact that the large volumes of goods are carried to remote regions using cargo transshipment.

As a rule, cargoes are delivered directly from the starting point to the consignee. Often this “door-to-door” delivery pattern can be observed when transporting goods from a manufacturer to a customer or a wholesale warehouse.
